BUSD staff use Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 AMD laptops (machine type 21MW).
Some docking stations, including older Lenovo Thunderbolt models, are not compatible with these laptops because the devices support standard USB-C connectivity rather than Thunderbolt.
This article explains how to identify compatible docking stations and troubleshoot docking station issues.
| Component | Specification |
|---|---|
| Manufacturer | Lenovo |
| Model | ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 AMD |
| Machine Type | 21MW |
| Docking Connection | USB-C |
| Thunderbolt Support | No |
| USB-C Video Output | DisplayPort 1.4 |
| USB-C Power Delivery | Supported |
The laptops have USB-C ports capable of data transfer, video output, and charging.
Important: USB-C and Thunderbolt use the same physical connector, but they are not interchangeable in every situation.
Lenovo ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock — Model 40AC
This docking station was reported by a BUSD teacher as not functioning with their district-issued laptop.
The 40AC is designed for Thunderbolt 3 connectivity, which the BUSD ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 AMD laptops do not provide.
Compatibility Status: Not supported for BUSD's standard staff laptops.
A regular USB-C port cannot provide Thunderbolt functionality simply by installing a driver.
Recommendation: Do not spend time installing Thunderbolt drivers or firmware in an attempt to make this dock compatible with the standard BUSD laptop. Replace it with a compatible USB-C docking station.
Lenovo ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock — Model 40AY
This dock is designed for USB-C connectivity rather than requiring Thunderbolt.
Features include:
External monitor connectivity through HDMI and DisplayPort
USB ports for keyboards, mice, and peripherals
Wired Ethernet connection
Laptop charging through USB-C
Support for multiple external displays, subject to laptop specifications
Note: Confirm the exact dock part number, compatibility, charging requirements, and monitor configuration using Lenovo's compatibility information before purchasing.
If a teacher reports docking station problems:
On the Lenovo laptop, press Windows + R.
Type msinfo32.
Press Enter.
In the System Information window, locate System Model.
Verify the model or machine type.
The standard BUSD laptop is the ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 AMD, machine type 21MW.
Locate the manufacturer's label on the bottom or back of the docking station.
Find the model or machine type number.
Compare it with the following:
| Dock Model | BUSD Compatibility |
|---|---|
| ThinkPad Thunderbolt 3 Dock (40AC) | Not supported |
| ThinkPad Universal USB-C Dock (40AY) | USB-C option; verify configuration |
| Other Lenovo USB-C docks | Verify with Lenovo |
| Other Thunderbolt docks | Do not assume compatibility |
If a teacher is using a dock confirmed to be compatible:
Verify that the docking station's power adapter is connected.
Confirm that the laptop is connected to the correct USB-C host port on the dock.
Use the manufacturer's recommended USB-C cable.
Disconnect and reconnect the docking station.
Restart the laptop.
Check Windows Settings → System → Display to verify external monitors are detected.
Check Device Manager for device errors.
Review Lenovo's support website for applicable dock drivers, firmware, or updates.
Test the dock with another compatible laptop if available.
Important: Driver or firmware updates can resolve some issues with compatible docking stations, but they cannot add Thunderbolt hardware support to a USB-C-only laptop.
